Rationale or Justification for proposed new course
Healthcare reform has now changed the reimbursement model to reward healthcare providers and allied health professionals for keeping people healthy. Leaders at a 2009 Institute of Medicine Summit on Integrative Health called for a new profession of health and wellness coaches to assist the medical health professions in addressing unhealthy behaviors that lead to chronic disease (e.g., obesity). This course will prepare students to work as wellness coaches and disease prevention professionals in healthcare systems and challenge wellness coaching certifications.
