Rationale or Justification for proposed new course
In the new M.S. program Wellness Coaching and Disease Prevention students will need a theoretical and applied understanding of how exercise is essential for prevention and for treatment of most chronic disease conditions. This understanding will best position them to assist patients/clients in reaching their health and wellness goals.
Course description for the Bulletin
Using a population health management perspective, students will gain a strong foundation in the physiology of exercise as medicine and the application of exercise prescription in coordination with the healthcare team.

Learning Outcomes (General)

Upon completion of this course students will be able to: Demonstrate through projects and written communication an understanding of the physiology of exercise as medicine for most chronic diseases using a prevention and treatment perspective; Analyze exercise science research; Apply exercise prescription principles to a wellness coaching relationship; Analyze the use of exercise in population health management models in healthcare; Critique ACSM position stands and their application in the Exercise is Medicine model; Develop a personal scope of practice for exercise in wellness coaching.
