Rationale or Justification for proposed new course
In the new M.S. program, Wellness Coaching and Disease Prevention, students will need a theoretical and applied understanding of theory and strategies for effective health behavior change. This understanding will best position them to assist patients/clients in reaching their health and wellness goals.
Course description for the Bulletin
Behavior Change Foundations and Strategies is a course that focuses upon the complexity of health behavior change and the skills necessary for wellness coaches to assess, plan, and evaluate behavior change interventions for individuals and communities. Health behavior change theories and strategies will be discussed. Topics covered in class will include: behavior modification, goal setting, self-management, coping skills, and social support. Emphasis will be placed upon the application of theory and foundations to wellness coaching and disease prevention.

Learning Outcomes (General)

After completion of this course, graduate students will be able to: • Compare and contrast at least five well-accepted health behavior theories • Explain the importance of theory-driven interventions to influence behavior change • Analyze at least one health behavior, its determinants and consequences • Identify assessment instruments that measure health behavior • Analyze various behavior change interventions and their effectiveness • Apply principles and strategies of health behavior change to wellness coaching practice

• Describe behavior change facilitation skills for wellness coaches • Develop and apply a behavior change strategy plan • Construct an assessment instrument to measure health behavior • Upon reviewing research literature, determine the efficacy of a selected theoretical approach to achieving behavior change
