Rationale or Justification for proposed new course
This course will assist students in the M.S. Wellness Coaching and Disease Prevention program in their development of advanced wellness coaching skills. These advanced skills will include intercultural communication, appreciative inquiry, and advanced skills in motivational interviewing and positive psychology. This course will also include applied wellness coaching experiences either one-on-one or in a group setting.
Course description for the Bulletin
In the course Advanced Wellness Coaching students will have an opportunity to further develop their one-on-one and/or group coaching skills with a variety of clientele. In addition, students will further develop their diversity/intercultural communication skills as it relates to health behavior change and the coaching relationship.

Outline of Major Content Areas
Group coaching skills; Research in Wellness Coaching; Appreciative inquiry/Positive Psychology; Advanced motivational interviewing skills; Graduate students will be expected to focus their efforts on more complex clients that are in need of secondary prevention strategies (e.g., prevention strategies utilized after a myocardial infarction); Intercultural development; Intercultural sensitivity; Critiquing the disposition and skills needed to function in a multicultural society with diverse clients/patients.
Learning Outcomes (General)

Upon completion of the course, the student will: 1. Apply methods of conducting a wellness coaching session for diverse clients in a one-on-one and group setting using a variety of coaching skills and assessment of coaching presence. 2. Demonstrate advanced motivational interviewing techniques, positive psychology and appreciative inquiry. 3. Demonstrate building trust and rapport with patients/clients.

4. Evaluate wellness coaching research. 5. Analyze their personal bias and values and how these attributes influence the coaching relationship. 6. Apply methods of prevention and wellness coaching to complex clients needing secondary prevention efforts. 7. Develop intercultural sensitivity and communication skills to assist diverse clients/patients in reaching their goals.

We have made a request that the library add one more coaching journal subscription to accommodate this new program. Request was made to Justine Martin on 11/10/14 by email.
Will teaching this course affect department staffing?
Yes This course is offered in the second year of the program; thus, the new faculty line for the program will teach this course pending approval in the April Dean's/Cabinet meeting where requests for positions are made. This program will use Metro Model to fund the position.
