Rationale or Justification for proposed new course
In the new M.S. program, Wellness Coaching and Disease Prevention, students will need a theoretical and applied understanding of how nutrition is essential for prevention and for treatment of most chronic disease conditions. This understanding will best position them to assist patients/clients in reaching their health and wellness goals.
Course description for the Bulletin
Using a population health management perspective, students will gain a strong foundation in the science of nutrition as medicine and the application of nutrition in prevention in coordination with the healthcare team.

Science of nutrition as medicine. Current knowledge in clinical nutrition and the application to practice in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Population health management. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position papers in nutrition is medicine model. Nutrition principles for the wellness coach. The role of nutrition professionals in healthcare. Scope of practice issues.
Learning Outcomes (General)

Upon completion of this course students will be able to: Demonstrate through projects and written communication an understanding of nutrition as medicine for most chronic diseases using a prevention and treatment perspective. Analyze nutrition science research. Apply nutrition principles to a wellness coaching relationship. Analyze the use of nutrition in population health management models in healthcare. Critique Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position papers and their application in the nutrition is medicine model. Develop a personal scope of practice for nutrition in wellness coaching

Yes Teaching loads for the three faculty in FCS-Dietetics and Nutrition will need to be adjusted to accommodate teaching this class every spring semester.

The name "Nutrition is Medicine" was chosen instead of "Nutrition as Medicine" since it aligns with another course in the program called "Exercise is Medicine."
